This is a keenly contested category, with a wide variety of configurations available.
The latest newcomer, Holden Zafira, made it to the final judging and was up against contenders from last year, Mitsubishi Nimbus and Honda Odyssey.
But in a close tussle, Nimbus still had the right recipe to win this category in Australia's Best Cars for the second year in a row.
Families that buy the vehicles in this category place a high importance on space, practicality and comfort, and it is these critical areas that Nimbus stays in front of the competition. The walk-through section between its front seats makes for easy access to rear space, and in this regard Nimbus and Odyssey have good layouts.
There is an increasing expectation that people movers will feel and act like a conventional vehicle on the road. Accordingly the finalists were tested over a wide variety of road conditions, including special dirt road stages, where the vehicles were fully laden with the team of judges.
The Nimbus performs closest to these car-like expectations as the McPherson strut suspension gives a good ride and predictable handling across the selection of road surfaces and conditions.
Also, the dampening and structural design keep passengers fairly well insulated from any harsh vibration or noise.
Nimbus's agile four-cylinder engine is well matched to the automatic transmission and provides for a good initial acceleration, even when loaded.
The standard features and build quality of Honda Odyssey are as good as it gets in this class, but even this is not enough to beat Nimbus.
Nor is the sporty feel of Holden's Zafira, plus clever seating and affordability, enough to push Nimbus aside.
