Last year's winner in this class, Hyundai Accent had to withstand fresh challenges from the new model Holden Barina and Toyota's more powerful 1.5-litre Echo Sportivo to take the honours again.

Accent embraces the desirable quantities of a good entry-level car and scores steadily across all three judging groups: value for money, design and function, and on the road. Many of the contenders in this class have specific outstanding attributes, but fail to maintain consistently high scores. Accent rates above average in 12 of 18 criteria and is the only one of 17 cars in the category not to have a below-average mark for any of the criteria.

In this budget-conscious market sector, the well-equipped Accent's price is competitive, and owners will be reassured to find that Hyundai's exceptional five-year/130,000km warranty (which is industry leading) is supported by low running and repair costs.

With the top ranking for space and practicality, good comfort and ride, flexible performance and a simple, straightforward cabin layout, it is an easy car to drive and live with on a daily basis. Once again, the important areas of safety and security are both above average for the class.

Second place getter, the attractively priced and equipped Barina, scores consistently, with top marks for handling and steering, while the well-specified Echo's improved performance and excellent fuel economy are off-set by the car's high purchase price.
